The number of PS Plus subscribers is declining, and Sony is confident in the new service categories.
Today, Sony revealed the harvest of the fiscal year ending last March, including the number of PS Plus subscribers, which witnessed a clear decrease from the fiscal year 2020.
Sony revealed that the total number of PS Plus subscribers reached 47.4 million as of the end of the fourth quarter in March 2022, down 0.6 million from the previous quarter (December 2021) and by 0.2 million on an annual basis.
This appears to be only the second time in eight years that PlayStation Plus subscribers have fallen between quarters, with the first decline also being recorded during the company’s fiscal year 2021, in the first quarter.
Sony also recorded a slight decrease in the number of monthly active users in March 2022 at 106 million, down 5 million from the previous quarter and 3 million year-over-year.
These numbers and the apparent decrease in the number of subscribers to the service, prompted some of the attendees to ask the company during the results call on Tuesday about its position on the recent changes in the number of subscribers to the PS Plus service, and whether it was considering plans to re-launch the service with the new system. As CFO Hickory Totoki replied
Let me give you the general direction. Total playing time is very important. On an annual basis, there was a decline, but the demand to stay at home was not so strong between January and February in 2021 compared to the previous year.
This is an 8 percent decrease compared to January and February in 2022. Compared to the end of March in 2020, there is a decrease of 5.9 million users.
Totoki indicated that although there has been a decrease in the number of active players since the end of the epidemic period, the general trend is improving. Referring to him that the epidemic period was exceptional due to the users’ interest in video games due to their stay at home, but after their return to normal life, it is normal to witness a clear decrease in the number of users.
Totoki expects the upcoming new monthly subscription service, which will be launched early this summer, to have a positive impact on users.
The new PlayStation Plus service will be launched in the Middle East on June 22nd. The prices of the three packages can be found
